I would love for people to stop referring to New Orleans as NOLA. We live in NEW ORLEANS. If you must abbreviate please N.O, La. works fine. I don't know of any born and raised New Orleanians that use that term.

My husband's family is from there, he went to school there. His family and college friends still live there, and we visit often. ALL of them use the term as a shorthand, so we feel comfortable doing as they do. Enjoy that delicious ire, and "laissez les bon ton rouillez!"

Thanks so much for the amazing story about K.V. and her restoration adventure! It brings me a lot of pride for you to spotlight such a positive story about an African American designer. I visited New Orleans conservation of History there many times and I always left inspired by what I saw. My motherβs family has roots in the vicinity. She didnβt like to drive so one of my memories is my first drive to Louisiana from Houston. I think I was 15 years old And armed with my learners permit. An amazing place!

Amazing home, amazing designer, great article. One problem (incredible this made it past editors considering it's an article highlighting Black History), the Selma Marches went FROM Selma TO Montgomery. I know it seems a little thing, unless your a POC who's entire history has been appropriated. And I'm a middle-aged white woman.

You are absolutely right, Andrea. I've just corrected it; historical facts are absolutely important to get right. Thank you so much for pointing out.

I am by no means an expert on this, but painting porch ceilings "haint blue" is based in Gullah Geechee tradition.

I've been reading about it. You're right: it's tradition is rooted in Gullah culture!

THANK YOU for NOT saying NOLA. Its nothing more than a modern day carpetbagger acronym.

What a wonderful article! I appreciate reading stories like these, and I am so inspired by the intentionality in the design and aesthetic of this home. Every aspect of her living space tells a story of beauty, persistence, and triumph. I love it!

I love that the home has so many historic references and salvaged materials, and yet has a clean, pure look to it. Beautifully balanced and uncluttered with "antique-y" things.

Beautiful, beautifully done. Simply done, not over done, which really brings out the character and charm of each room. Love the blue agent wall!

The whole article is inspiring! Since recently finishing a horrific book about slavery, I will look for some literature about the "Creole" people -hopefully to balance out some of the sickening capabilities of man. Love the design, and the homage it pays.

The restoration is amazing! I'm a born and bred Brooklynite, and that encourages me the more to visit NOLA!

So many homes in NOLA are being given the Flip or Flop look by developers these days - all character gone, bland, neutral kitchens - it's so sad and that's why this project made me so happy. Such a beautiful job, congrats to Kex!

As a NO native we had to replace our 90 year-old heart pine floors. As lovely as they were pine is a very SOFT wood--and ours was old and cured. New pine --especially after Katrina--looked like crap. We went with pecan --and indigenous wood with lovely color--no choice on type after Katrina--and HARD. I don't have to look a million indentations from peoples shoes nd furniture.

What a beautiful home! The art gallery wall, the use of local reclaimed wood, the fireplaces, the bathroom, etc., but most importantly, honoring the history of the home, area, and the people. I found myself going backwards and forwards throughout the article and the photos. Just love...
