Congratulations to this week's winners!
Kitchenwitchcookie won the contest for Your Best Brussels Sprouts Recipe with Grilled Brussels Sprouts.
Collin won the contest for Your Best Beer Cocktail with Bubbly Manhattan.
We asked them both to answer a few questions about cooking and eating.
Is there a dish that you are known for among friends and family?
I have a ready-to-bake cookie company (www.kitchenwitchcookie.com), so I am relied upon to bring dessert in any form to any gathering. This includes cookies, cakes, pies, brownies, etc. Most of my friends balk at the thought of baking for me. Outside of the aforementioned treats, I think my chicken pot pie is one of my stand-outs.
What's a food you really don't like?
Tomato guts.
What is your favorite fall dish?
A lemon- and garlic-stuffed, herb-roasted chicken served with butter-laden mashed potatoes.
Describe your most spectacular kitchen disaster.
I had to consult my husband for this one, and he really enjoyed mulling over the possible responses. Truth is, though, I haven't set either of us on fire yet, so my disasters are limited to forgetting to put baking powder in a triple batch of scones and undercooking fish.
What was the menu for the last dinner party you hosted?
Though we both love to entertain, I have to admit that this is really my husband's territory. For our last dinner party he made: mojitos with mint from the garden; homemade guacamole; homemade salsa; fresh veggies and dip; marinated, grilled pork tenderloin; grilled brussels sprouts; baked sweet potato (on the grill...are you sensing a trend?); self-assembled ice cream sandwiches with freshly baked kitchen witch cookies and vanilla ice cream. Okay, I brought the dessert...again!
Apron or no apron?
Always an apron; sometimes a chef's coat.
What's your favorite food-related scene in a movie?
When Remy (from Ratatouille) is doing his best to escape the kitchen at Gusteau's, but can't help himself from "doctoring" the soup.
What do you listen to (if anything) while you're in the kitchen?
I work best in complete silence. Cooking and baking are meditative to me, so my brain processes a lot of other stuff, while my hands are busy measuring, mixing, or chopping.
You prefer to cook: a. during the day b. at night c. whenever
A) During the day, but with small kids I usually end up doing a lot B) at night!
When it comes to tidying up, you usually: a. clean as you cook. b. do all the dishes once you've finished cooking. c. leave the kitchen a shambles for your spouse/roommate/kids to clean.
Do all the dishes once I've finished cooking AND eating! (My husband might give you a different answer.)
Is there a dish that you are known for among friends and family?
Steak au poivre, or maybe duck ragu.
What's a food you really don't like?
Bok choy. Hate it. Hate it so much that I hate the people who love it. Or at least, I can't trust them the way I used to.
What is your favorite fall dish?
A hearty bean stew with big chunks of carrot and bits of ham hock.
Describe your most spectacular kitchen disaster.
I don't have disasters. I have experiments.
What was the menu for the last dinner party you hosted?
Duck in red mole tacos, spicy black beans, guacamole, guajillo salsa, shredded brussels sprouts, plum tart.
Apron or no apron?
What's an "apron"?
What's your favorite food-related scene in a movie?
The farting scene in "Blazing Saddles"
What do you listen to (if anything) while you're in the kitchen?
My daughter asking what I'm doing and my wife asking when I'll be done.
You prefer to cook:
c. whenever
When it comes to tidying up, you usually:
Sort of a combo between b. (do all the dishes once you've finished cooking) and c. (leave the kitchen a shambles for your spouse/roommate/kids to clean).
