I am in awe of you Valerie!!!!
My cooking and cleaning style is exactly as you’d described in your 60 days+ modus operandi!!
I’ve often felt so embarrassed when I finally get a cleaning lady over here that I make up excuses like, ‘I had a friend stay over to dog sit and she left my apartment like this. So I hope you’ll be able to manage today’!!!
Today I spent 2 hours cleaning my apartment and I didn’t even get to the dishes!! I did feel very proud of myself! Then usually I take the next day or two or ten days off cleaning coz it was so much bloody work!
But you’ve been an inspiration and I’m going to try and keep the momentum going!! Thank you so much for this honesty and insight !!

I am a night owl and at some point in my thirties decided that I deserve easing into the day without dirty dishes. I made a rule for myself that I clean the sink before going to bed and also floss my teeth. something for the apartment and something for my health.
It is minimal, but makes a nice difference in the quality of my life, especially in the mornings. It is also really satisfying to wash all the dishes after a dinner party, drinking the last of the wine and listening to music, after everyone has gone home. You get to think back on the joy of feeding people well.

I've lived in many places. It seems that 2 ends of the spectrum (rural vs urban) are the ones that quickly teach us to clean as we go. If we don't, unwanted visitors show up in a hurry. and create problems that get pricey very quickly when a particular pest decides that your home is a good source of sustenance.
I'm not perfect; dishes may sit in the sink overnight because I haven't emptied the dishwasher yet, but they've been rinsed to minimize how attractive they are to sugar ants (the bane of the South) and mice.

I've taken to clearing the sink every night, after tucking in my little munchkin and her dog-sister (who really gets annoyed if I don't do this; she comings looking for me). The process of cleaning up has helped me relax and wind-down for bed. In the morning, I stumble into the kitchen to make coffee. Having a clean kitchen and a clear sink is magical and helps me get our day started on a good note :)

I totally get what you mean about the mental benefits of doing this. Having a tiny kitchen has really helped me - I don't have a dishwasher or space to stack up tons of dirty dishes, but I also don't have space to store duplicates - if the saucepan is dirty, I can't cook. I have no choice but to keep up! As annoying as the idea is, cleaning as you go helps SO much. I also try to clean and tidy if I'm waiting on water to boil in the kettle or heating up a pan on the stove. I work from home so my rule is that I can put small things in the sink during the day but by the evening I have to wash everything and the sink must be empty before I go to bed. I put away the clean dishes after they've sat on the drying rack overnight - it's such an easy and satisfying way to start out my morning as I make my coffee or tea.

I clear out the drying rack in the morning too! While I'm drinking coffee. It's meditative. And I'm so glad other people have "rules" for themselves. I'm full of them. If work from home too, and a "rule" I mostly follow is that if I notice counter-clutter, I have to stop and clean it. "see it, clean it." I might not always do that in the thick of things, but using it as a baseline helps.

HAHAHAHA you must not live in NYC. Once a houseguest, a musician I was hosting but didn't actually know, watched me wash, dry, and put away all the dishes from his post concert snack, wash and dry the kitchen counters, scrub out and dry the sink, flip the dish drainer to an upright position and dry that too, sweep the floor, and take out the garbage. "OCD much?" he asked. Nope, I replied, this is what I have to do every single night if I want to avoid mice and roaches.

A man who makes fun of you after you're made him a post-concert snack and washed his dishes.....is a man to avoid!
I do live in NYC, but the people who renovated my building accidentally did something right and I don't have mice or roaches. (Undeservedly, obviously). I do have leaking windows and the occasional scary centipede, though, so no one here is left unscathed.
