I love the idea of outdoor rooms. We just bought a property with enough yard space to utilise it with something like outdoor rooms. Love the look you have in the photos, very inspiring! We recently got our concrete driveway done and with some additions like you have in the photos it could look as good as that. That's what we hoping for anyway! Thanks for the article.

I love this look. For those of us in urban villages with little space between our houses and the sidewalk, our large, front porches with generous roof overhangs to provide extra shade, and plenty of comfy furniture, serve the same function. ;o)

I am pleased the outdoor spaces designs and info was presented. I finished my second area earlier this year as a Yosemite garden. With large boulders and native plantings. The first area was a timber framed shelter.

Hi, I love social front yards. I lived in a Mediterranean country for a while and I loved the fact that people sat outside their front doors. And ate in the front of the house as well. When I came back to USAmoved into my house 40 yrs ago I put a front patio outside my front yard. To have morning coffee, lunch or in evening get together. No one house in area did that it was all in back yard. Now after 40 yrs I see people putting tables and chairs out front.
Not porches but front patios. Times change.

I think it's worth considering which direction your front yard faces. On the whole, people don't really like to hang out in East facing spaces in the evening, for example, so those front yards might be better suited to swings or small seating suitable to having a morning cup of coffee versus a dinner table.
Personally, I really like the idea of social front yards, and originally planned something like this at my new-to-me house, but I've learned that the volume of motorcycle traffic in front of my house drives me nuts, so I'm putting up a dense hedge with (hopefully) inviting openings to draw people inside.

I live on a block of small row houses. In nice weather, everyone uses their front porch, the sidewalk and even the street as an extension of their house. This has always been common in cities.

Having a social front yard space is very appealing to me. We live in a long necked cul de sac with young families (we are the retired ones!) I think having this type of space allows all neighbors to gather and have some good times.

Personally, I prefer a garden that's friendly to plants, birds etc., but paving it over does seem to be a way to go, and I suppose it makes sense- if you only use your yard for entertaining and want it to look like it was just stamped out in a factory, as so many do nowadays, plants are unquestionably messy and troublesome. Lawns can be a somewhat intermediate step, but are huge users of resources that are becoming scarce in many places; a lot of Astroturf going in in the west.
