This week, the Kitchen Basics column in Whole Foods Market Cooking tackles avocados -- those "creamy as butter and as subtle as white chocolate" everyday luxuries that elevate egg sandwiches to new heights and put salsa to shame when made into guacamole for a party.

There are tips for everyone from beginners (how to buy avocados by giving them a gentle squeeze) to pros (you can freeze avocado meat, which I didn't know!) -- whether you prefer to mash them, slice them, or eat them straight out of the shell.
