Kickstarter Love: Wine Simplified

September  4, 2012

Each week in Kickstarter Love, Feed52 will feature a Kickstarter project that focuses on food and the community. Basically, it’s about cool people doing cool things with food. This week, wine loses its pretense.

Most of us know that red is better with meat and white is better with fish, but when it comes to wine, it’s easy for knowledge to stop there. Trips to the wine store become exercises in guesswork, accompanied by at least a few deer-in-the-headlights gazes at the racks before you leave.

We’re likely all too busy to become sommeliers of our own, but there are simple tricks to learn to help decode the wine world, break it down from grape to bottle. Did you know that you can learn a lot about how a wine will taste just from fine print on the label? Or even label design?

Here to teach us these answers -- and open up our palates -- is sommelier and wine author Marnie Old. She’s done all of the homework (so we don’t have to), and reformatted the world of wine into an uncomplicated, approachable e-book. It’s wine knowledge, without the pretense.

Wine Simplified is almost complete; funds from the Kickstarter campaign would go toward professional photos and graphics to help bring her book to life. Marnie Old refers to it as “vinlightenment.” Whatever you call it, you’ll be drinking better wines by the time you’re through -- and that, we can’t argue with.

I have a thing for most foods topped with a fried egg, a strange disdain for overly soupy tomato sauce, and I can never make it home without ripping off the end of a newly-bought baguette. I like spoons very much.
