I combined the blackberry and sugar base for drinking vinegar and left it for a week. Is it still safe?

I added the champagne vinegar (2:2:2 recipe of vinegar/sugar/berries) today. The berry-sugar mix looked and smelled fine, but I want to be sure.

Did you leave it in the refrigerator or at room temperature? I think it's ok if it has been sitting in the fridge for a week, but not ok if its been sitting on the counter (even in a closed container) at room temperature.
