This summer, we're inviting you to make grilling season more delicious—and competitive—than ever. Together with our friends at Kikkoman, we’re challenging you, our community of talented home cooks, to submit your most creative recipe starring rich, sweet Kikkoman® Teriyaki Marinade & Sauce.

The winning recipe will have a serious payoff: $5,000 (uh-huh). And while only one dish will be crowned the champion of our Tournament of Teriyaki, we have cash awards for everyone who makes it to the final four. Our Four Finalists Are...


The Ingredients We Asked For

Here is what we asked our tournament participants to provide in their entries:

We’re looking for crazy good recipes that use Kikkoman® Teriyaki Marinade & Sauce in a creative way on the grill. Think: César’s Teriyaki & Sofrito Grilled Lobster Tails, which call for a flavor-packed, Kikkoman® Teriyaki-infused butter steeped in garlic, scallions, shishitos, and cilantro to baste the tails as they grill.

All you need to do to enter is to submit a photo of your dish—which must use Kikkoman® Teriyaki Marinade & Sauce and a grilling element—along with a statement explaining what makes it great. And yes, grill pans most certainly count.

Your photo should be clear, irresistible, and beautiful, like one of the Test Kitchen-approved recipes you'd find on Food52. It should also be taken by you (let’s keep this contest old school, no AI shortcuts, cool?). Call in your best photographer friend for help if you need to—there’s major winnings for you both! Bonus points if you include the bottle of Kikkoman® Teriyaki Marinade & Sauce in the pic.

Then, tell us about your dish. Write a brief, 100- to 300-word description of your recipe. Include the big idea or story behind it, the main ingredients and steps, what makes it brilliantly creative, and how Kikkoman® Teriyaki Marinade & Sauce enhances the dish. (That’s right, we don’t need an actual recipe, just a paragraph that brings it to life!)


When to Enter

The contest will open on July 22, 2024 at 12:00pm EST. You'll have until August 12, 2024 at 11:59pm EST to submit your recipe.


How We'll Be Judging the Entries

Once the contest closes, the Food52 editorial team and Kikkoman will review (and cook!) the recipes. We'll narrow down all the submissions to the top four using these criteria:

  • Relevance to contest theme and overall appeal of the recipe.
  • Creativity and inventiveness.
  • Taste and presentation.
  • Quality of photography and recipe description.

Once we select the top four recipes, the Food52 community will vote on the finalists in a bracket-style tournament via Instagram Stories on the @Food52 account until we have our grand-prize winner. (For the full judging criteria, check out the contest rules and conditions page here).


What You Could Win

Every recipe that makes it to the final four is a winner! Here's the breakdown:

  • The winner of the recipe bracket will receive a Grand Prize of $5,000
  • 2nd Place - $2,500
  • 3rd Place - $1,500
  • 4th Place - $500

Plus, we'll be randomly selecting one person who votes for the winner in our Instagram Story to win a Kikkoman® Teriyaki Marinade & Sauce prize pack & Food52 Apron!
