Author Notes

My great aunt made this simple chocolate frosting for a simple chocolate cake at least once a week for her family which included my semi orphaned father, who like her, was a huge chocolate lover. If she was alive today, Evie would be 133 years old. She lived to quite an advanced age and I was lucky to be next to the frosting bowl many times to get the privilege of licking the spatula. My mother continued to make the cake for my father and I can honestly say that neither he nor I ever tired of it. —dymnyno

What You'll Need
Ingredients
  • 2/3 cup melted butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 tablespoons strong coffee (I use cold brew)
Directions
  1. Sift the powdered sugar and the cocoa powder together in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Pour in the melted butter and the strong coffee and mix together.
  3. Using a wire whisk,(I use a flat whisk) whip it together until it becomes fluffy and smooth, about 3 or 4 minutes.

Fantastic! I agree with using espresso. If you are into coffee you can't go wrong. I topped a devil's food cake with this and I'm ashamed to say that my wife, 5 year old daughter and I ate the entire cake in 1 day. You can't go wrong with simplicity

This frosting is definitely a 5!! Easy to make. It goes on initially as a glaze effect and as it cools, it stiffens. I completed the center and then added the top layer and frosted it for a nice glazed look. I waited for the frosting to cool some and then completed the sides. The texture and taste are amazing.

Awesome frosting! I used fresh espresso and the frosting had a lovely coffee flavor to it. The coffee definitely does not hide in this recipe like it does in some- if you're just looking to enrich the chocolate flavor, try something else

10/10 this recipe was hands down delicious!! There was a bit of confusion at first for me though. You need to let the frosting set on the cake.

My mom would make this frosting when we were growing up. She slathered it on top of a recipe called "crazy cake". Boy, this has really brought back many childhood memories! Huge Thanks for sharing this!!
