A wholesome, 4-ingredient DIY grenadine for better drinks at home -- plus a gutsy technique for juicing a pomegranate without seeding first. (Wear an apron -- or wear black -- to be safe from stains, but this juicing technique is surprisingly contained.) Stir it into sparkling water (along with a splash of lemon and lime juice for a DIY Shirley Temple), pour it over ice cream and yogurt and cake, explore your bar. This recipe halves well. Ingredients
  • 2 cups fresh pomegranate juice (two to four large pomegranates) or 100% pomegranate juice like POM Wonderful
  • 2 cups unbleached sugar
  • 2 fluid ounces (1/4 cup) pomegranate molasses
  • 1 teaspoon orange blossom water
Directions
  1. If you are using fresh pomegranates, slice them in half and press the juice out using a citrus juicer. Strain juice, crushing any unbroken arils with the back of a spoon. Alternately, you can seed the pomegranate, then blend the seeds in your blender and strain out the juice.
  2. Heat the pomegranate juice over low heat, just enough to melt the sugar (well below the level of a boil). Stir in the sugar until the mixture is clear and the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Stir in the pomegranate molasses and orange blossom water and stir until dissolved.
  4. Allow the mixture to cool and transfer to a bottle for storing in the refrigerator. If you won't be using within about a month, you can optionally add an ounce of vodka, or freeze the syrup.

@JoyceLee, you can get it at any Middle Eastern grocery store. You can also try Health food stores, Whole Foods, William Sonoma, Sur La Table, and of course, online.

This is quite delicious, I'm tempted to mix a cocktail on a Monday afternoon! Used a couple of drops of BoyaJian Orange oil dissolved in the water. And made it low cal with a healthy sugar alternative. Doubled my batch using a large bottle of Pom. Enough to share with my soon to be happy friends.

I am so excited for his book. I adore everything that has come out of Clyde Common; including my first meal there, on my 29th birthday (after a horrible day-- my best friend's boyfriend committed suicide that morning), which included parsnip (!!) cake, and also my marriage (our first date and our first anniversary were celebrated there).

I can always find it at my local Middle Eastern stores. A well-stocked grocery store with a decent international section might also have it.

I get the fresh pomegranate seeds from Trader Joe's. It is in their produce section in small plastic containers. I buy two(2) of them and freeze immediately into a Baggie. Layout flat in freezer. Then use however you wish, like this recipe.
