Japanese Beef Rice Bowl (牛丼 - Gyudon)

What You'll Need
Ingredients
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1/2 pound thinly sliced beef
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sake
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons hon-dashi powder
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 beaten eggs
  • 2 bowls of steamed brown rice
Directions
  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat and cook the onions until caramelized.
  2. Add soy sauce, sake, sesame oil, ginger, sugar, and beef and cook for another ~3 minutes or until beef has absorbed the flavors.
  3. Add hon-dashi and 1/2 cup of water and boil for ~3 minutes.
  4. Simmer on medium heat (covered) for 5 minutes. Add beaten eggs over the beef and cook until the egg is done.
  5. Pour meat and sauce on top of a bowl of steamed brown rice.

We loved this! Very week-night friendly and delicious. The fresh ginger really makes it lively. I doubled the recipe for our family with no trouble. I used London broil, sliced very thinly and it was tender and flavorful. I did have to substitute chicken broth for the hon-dashi and water and it worked out fine, just not quite with the same flavor. Next time I'll plan ahead. Thank you!

That's awesome! I'm happy to hear that. It is such an easy recipe too!!! I like making a side of veggies to go with it. So much flavor from the meat! Love the meat sauce!!! :)
