Ingredients
  • 1 cup dates; chopped
  • 1 cup black walnuts; chopped
  • 1 cup water; boiling
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup general purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
Directions
  1. Stir the dates and nuts into the boiling water, and let this set while preparing the batter.
  2. Cream well the sugar, shortening and egg - beat a lot.
  3. Add the flour, baking soda and baking powder. Stir in the date/nut mixture.

  5. Bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes.
  6. Serve warm or at room temperature with whipped cream, caramel sauce or ice cream.
