Fjord Sugar Cookies

Author Notes: After receiving a bag of these this holiday season, I begged for the recipe. I've tried several "non-rollout" sugar cookie recipes from reputable sources and these are the best I've had. Judging from my friend's scan, the hand-typed recipe (attributed to Kris Gay) may have come from an old, community organization-type, self-published "recipe book." It makes a very loose dough that must be refrigerated well. eggnation

Makes: approx. 4 dozen

  • 1 cup oil
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  1. Mix all ingredients (except flour) well until smooth and creamy. Add 2-3 cups flour. Stir in remaining flour (on lowest mixer setting or) by hand. Will be a soft dough. Refrigerate thoroughly. Roll 1 tsp. balls of dough, place slightly apart on cookie sheet, and flatten with cookie stamp or fancy-bottomed glass dipped in sugar.
  2. Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes. Do not brown.
