ohana is family and there is no favorite family food like a burger. in hawaii we like to spend time on the beach so this is a best burger for the grill. i was going to call this a blue hawaii burger but im not an elvis fan. this burger is no ka 'oi! —woody

Ingredients
  • 1 lb lean ground sirloin (12 % fat)
  • 1 can spam, sliced thin
  • 1/2 cube butter, softened
  • 4 tbs blue cheese crumbles
  • 2 maui onions
  • mayo
  • local tomatoes
  • 4 hamburger buns , sweet hawaiian is my favorite, but like thin ones too
  • salt, pepper
Directions
  1. when the butter soft, mix the blue cheese crumbles in it.
  2. make 4 patties out of the beef.
  3. make a pocket in the patty with your finger and stuff it with the blue cheese and butter combo and then cover the hole with more beef.
  4. do this with all patties.
  5. make a hot grill using wood or charcoal.
  6. cook each burger patty until it is as cooked as you want it. grill the spam. don't use the whole can. you can use the rest for tomorrow breakfast.
  7. brush the sliced maui onions with oil and grill them too.
  8. toast the buns too
  9. assemble: bun bottom, mayo, hamburger ,spam, maui onion, tomato and bun top with more mayo. then salt and pepper.
  10. no ka 'oi if there is any cheese and butter left over just spread it over the grilled hamburger bun.

Wow - just home from Kauai and already homesick for those menu posts in family restaurants for fried spam, etc - your burger looks delicious - mahalo!
Wow...I may die of heart failure after eating this, but it sounds like I would die happy.

Oh my ...I love this...just made it for dinner... did NOT add the spam...sorry...but the burger was sooo juicy and the blue cheese just melted into the burger....total synergy! lucky me...My local market always has Maui onions...so sweet. Local tomatoes including my own are ripe!!!yeah!!!!! Post a pic???

I like the butter idea...probably gives such lean meat some tasty fat. I hear that Whole Foods is now in the Hawaiian Ilands...I bet you're happy to have some great products. The spam...well, I guess it's a traditional food for you guys.
