Author Notes

Jaljeera (pictured in the front of the photograph above) is an Indian beverage that aids in digestion, prevents nausea, and stimulates appetite especially in the sultry, humid weather condition of India. —Annada Rathi

What You'll Need
Ingredients
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin
  • 35 mint leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon black salt
  • 1 to 2 pinches fresh black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon amchur (raw mango powder)
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar (optional)
Directions
  1. Toast cumin seeds in a skillet for 5 to 6 minutes on medium heat.
  2. Add the toasted cumin and all the other ingredients to a blender. Make sure you blend everything to a fine paste. Some people prefer sugar in jaljeera. Please try this recipe with or without sugar and decide for yourself.
  3. Add 2 glasses of water (about 16 ounces) to this paste. If you prefer a smooth drink, run this mix through a sieve. Chill before serving.

To some people's frustration, I like to talk about food before cooking, while cooking, while eating and of course after eating.

This drink takes me back to my Indian childhood! Its a perfect for soothing upset stomachs or just having a glass when you want something tangy and refreshing! Buying jaljeera powder in Indian grocery stores is also another alternative. Plus, you can also sprinkle this condiment on a simple salad of cucumbers+tomatoes+onions+cilantro+lime as an accompaniment to an Indian meal!

can't wait to try this! is there a suitable substitution for amchoor, or can i leave it out?

Amchoor is generally found in Indian grocery stores. If you don't find it, just substitute it with lime juice of equal proportion.
