Dahl is traditionally a family secret. This dahl has led a beautiful and secret life in my sister in law's family.

What You'll Need
Ingredients
  • Lentils
  • 1 cup brown lentils
  • 3.5 cups water
  • .5 cups veggie broth
  • tadka
  • .5 onion
  • 1 tablespoon ginger
  • 1 tablespoon garlic
  • 1 turmeric (a finger)
  • 2 green chilis -- I use jalapenos
  • .5 bunches cilantro
  • .5 pints tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
Directions
  1. Make the lentils, kiddos.
  2. While making the lentils, lightly brown the onions.
  3. Smoosh and chop the garlic, the ginger, and the turmeric. Toss 'em into the the tadka.
  4. Once everything gets fragrant, bloom the garam masala for a few beats, then throw in the tomatoes and chilis
  5. Combine all that business with the lentils, then use a hand mixer to achieve the right consistency.
  6. Serve over rice. Win the day.
