6 Ways to Use Coffee Beans + a Giveaway!

For our Provisions shop, we search for the best and most beautiful things for our kitchen and home. And since we like to think outside the box, we’re showing you all of the different ways to use some of our favorite products.

Today: When life gives you coffee, make cake. And iced coffee. And chicken. Tell us how you use coffee in the comments for a chance to win two bags of Stumptown Hair Bender blend beans and a Hario Skerton coffee grinder!

Shop the Story

One of our best-selling coffees on Provisions is this Hair Bender blend from Stumptown, a Portland, Oregon company committed to fair trade and sustainable sourcing. And their coffee doesn’t just do good, it tastes good.

This particular roast uses beans from across the globe -- Latin America, East Africa, and Indonesia -- and the result is a coffee with notes of chocolate, caramel, jasmine, Meyer lemon, apricot, and pineapple.

One benefit of a small, hands-on operation like Stumptown is their ability to monitor each coffee, which results in consistently layered blends like the Hair Bender. If the beans from Latin America are skewing too fruity one August, they’ll add a bean that's a bit more savory to balance it out, which keeps the taste consistent throughout the year.

Other (read: bigger) coffee companies often don’t have the luxury or flexibility to taste and adjust their blends, so they roast the heck out of their beans to keep them consistent, which destroys all of the nuance. Stumptown, on the other hand, is in it for the flavor -- so they aim to make coffees that showcase how the beans are supposed to taste.

So once you’ve got a bag of very good coffee on your hands, what do you do with it besides the obvious? Here are 6 more ways to make the most of it:

1. Coffee ice cubes. We think the world would be a better place without watered down iced coffee. Here's Merrill's technique for avoiding it.

2. Turn it into cake. What’s that? You like coffee and ice cream and cake? You’re officially on our team. When we see an opportunity to turn something into cake, we seize it. This coffee ice cream cake recipe is exceptional, but you can make ice cream cake without a recipe too.

3. Fix furniture scratches. Used coffee grounds shouldn't go to waste -- before tossing them, give them a second life: Dip a cotton swap into your old grounds and use it to buff a scratched area of any dark wood furniture. Once it sits for a few minutes, wipe it off gently with a towel or a clean cotton ball. It doesn’t remove the scratch, but goes a long way in making it less noticeable.

More: Turn more pantry basics into cleaning tools.

4. Improve your gardening. We told you not to toss your coffee grounds! Add them to your garden soil (or any plant you’ve got). Coffee grounds contain a lot of nitrogen which is excellent for plants. Start with a spoonful mixed into soil to see how your plants do -- some can handle more than others.

More: Grow your own greens this year.

5. Make perfect chicken. Brine your chicken overnight in a spiced coffee brine using gingerroot’s chicken recipe. It yields a tender chicken with a sweet and crackly crust.

6. Up your ice cream game. If you haven’t been pouring hot coffee over vanilla ice cream, well, you haven’t been living. Hot and cold, bitter and sweet, black and white combine for a top-notch caffeinated sundae. Bonus: It’s one of the quickest yet most elegant desserts to make for guests.

We want to know your favorite way to use coffee! Tell us in the comments by Friday July 18th at 6 p.m. for a chance to win two bags of Stumptown Hair Bender coffee beans and a Hario Skerton coffee grinder!

I like warm homemade bread slathered with fresh raw milk butter, ice cream in all seasons, the smell of garlic in olive oil, and sugar snap peas fresh off the vine.

I personally love to make cold brew iced lattes with my infused simple syrups. Also if I'm baking I add coffee to anything chocolate for a more complex flavor.

Instant espresso in brownies! Mmmm.

Tiffany W. March 1, 2015
Coffee on good vanilla bean ice cream is the best.

Tammy P. February 28, 2015
Love to cook with it and put the grounds into the garden.

Early morning is my mental prep time for the day and needs to be accompanied by a good cup of coffee from my French press. It is an 8-cup press and, while I could drink that much, I shouldn't (at least not more than once or twice a week). What to do with the remaining coffee? Pour it in a mason jar and put in the fridge. Mid-afternoon slumps require iced coffee!

Deb July 19, 2014
in brownies or anything chocolate for a richer flavor

Annette P. July 18, 2014
I use it in BBQ sauce.

cookinginvictoria July 18, 2014
No matter what the season, I love a cup of steaming hot coffee in the morning with just a bit of cream. On a warm summer afternoon, nothing beats a cold brewed iced coffee. I also frequently use coffee when baking chocolate cakes and brownies. It adds a lovely depth of flavor. My favorite coffee recipes that are pretty much staples in my kitchen include KelseyTheNaptimeChef's Double Chocolate Espresso Cookies (https://food52.com/recipes/1172-double-chocolate-espresso-cookies) and mrslarkin's coffee syrup (https://food52.com/recipes/11227-coffee-syrup).

Mouth-watering spicy pumpkin bread, made with a touch of Hair Bender coffee blend, walnuts and cocoa nibs in the batter. And of course, a cup of Stumptown Hair Bender coffee to validate the goodness.

Matt M. July 17, 2014
My burr grinder isn't the best so it accumulates espresso-grind fine powder in the receptacle. Adding a bit of the powder to overnight steel cut oats gives some great coffee flavor plus a caffeine buzz. Waste not want not.

so smart to add to overnight oats! trying that tonight.

Mother D. July 16, 2014
As intended; as a hot way to start the morning or cold afternoon pick-me-up. I use brewed coffee or espresso in several barbecue sauces I make as well and use fresh ground beans as part of my barbecue dry-rub from everything from brisket to ribs.

Cathy July 16, 2014
My mother's favorite icing was mocha, so naturally it became mine. A fresh vanilla cake with mocha icing topped with Homemade coconut ice cream made with coffee and bittersweet chocolate chips. Then there is iced coffee with coconut milk and dark chocolate powder. Double yum, ok now my mouth is drooling! (I use the coconut mild since I cannot always have milk. Can be purchased unsweetened, sweetened, vanilla flavored and blended with almond milk. Really great in my coffee). Coffee is great when used in a beef or pork marinade. Stay green and use the coffee grinds for so many things like flower beds, dying clothes, dying your own paper for card, etc...........

Lori G. July 16, 2014
There is nothing like the aroma of freshly ground Stumptown Hair Bender coffee beans grinding in a Harlo Skerton coffee grinder, except for the rich taste of the fantastic coffee brewing. I would spread the coffee grounds in standing water in my yard. I have heard it can be used as a mosquito repellant.

Ute July 16, 2014
All our coffee grounds go into the garden. I like to contribute this years wonderful blueberry crop to our enriching the soil with coffee grounds in the middle of a drought.

FlowBlue July 16, 2014
Chocolate cappuccino cheesecake.

Tiffany W. July 16, 2014
Start the day with a big mug, and for dessert vanilla bean ice cream and good coffee either mixed or float like. Don't forget to reuse grounds in garden and coffee ice cubes for your iced coffee won't water it down.

Nicole July 16, 2014
I make super mocha macarons! For the shells, I use a traditional recipe with almond flour but I mix in a pinch of super finely ground espresso. Then for the filling, I make a dark chocolate ganache with heavy cream that's been steeped in ground coffee or espresso then strained. They balance the delicacy of French macarons with a real punch of flavor!

Joan S. July 16, 2014
I have used assorted coffee beans tied up with ribbon in small packages for friends to take home from book club.thereis nothing like a mug of fresh coffee and a good book ps the girls always want to know the coffee I use?

Joan S. July 16, 2014
In the midst of summer I pour my favorite coffee into my individual bunt cake molds and freeze for a low calorie dessert with a dollop of whipped cream drizzled with melted dark chocolate. So very satisfying and better than sorbet.

Clement P. July 16, 2014
Tiramisu!

Sierra T. July 16, 2014
Have you ever tired coffee flavored popcorn? I love making this, pop the corn with coffee instead of oil (I use the microwave popper from sur la table) and drizzled with chocolate. perfect.

Nicole July 15, 2014
my favorite is just plain iced coffee!

Lisa July 15, 2014

Espresso grounds in baked chocolate goods.

Sunjoo July 15, 2014
Make Espresso Ice Cube Lattes. Pour cold milk over strong espresso ice cubes and let it slowly melt and infuse the coffee flavors. I also like to infuse espresso into my waffle mix or make espresso syrup for my waffles. Coffee in my breakfast = Breakfast of Caffeions!

bodhi_lisa July 15, 2014
I really use it as a flavoring agent in baking, stews, marinades and anytime I cook with chocolate.

Karlyn L. July 14, 2014
mudd pie! and, honestly, a simple mug of fresh french-press coffee in the morning

rachel July 14, 2014
Drinking it is still my #1. :) But I like to add it in chocolate baked goods -- it really enhances the chocolate flavor!

Jocelyn R. July 13, 2014
Coffee has a million uses, it's amazing. Body scrub! Compost! Cleaning the grit off your pans!

Food wise: Coffee ancho chile sauce on some short ribs or just generally used as a rub for beef! Brownies! Tiramisu! Caramels! Homemade Kahlua and Bailey's!

AntoniaJames July 13, 2014
Coffee extract made with rum or brandy. (I usually have both on hand.) So many uses! ;o)

Audrey July 13, 2014
Well, my absolute favorite way to use coffee is to just down cup after cup of good coffee (with plenty of milk and sugar). But I also have a shameful shower-staining habit of using my leftover coffee grounds to make a body scrub paste! I take my day's worth of used grounds and tap them out of the filter and into a small bowl. I add a little glug of olive oil or liquified coconut oil. I take that into the shower with me and scrub away! It's my lone weird-at-home-DIY-beauty-concoction. If I'm not careful rinsing the shower afterwards it does stain the tiles-- nothing some elbow grease can't get out, but definitely unsightly until I bother cleaning.

It's been such a lovely way for me to get another use out of my grounds that I continue to do it despite the extra work I have to put into cleaning my shower!

Steve July 13, 2014
Favorite way to use coffee? Make your own Kahlua. Coffee and rum, with sugar.

Alix July 13, 2014
Coffee over ice cream or gelato (not quite affogato since it's not espresso, but it still tastes great). Coffee grounds are also an excellent addition to our compost bin!

john July 12, 2014
i use used coffee in plants. I have also on occasion used coffee beans in kids crafts.

Sara C. July 12, 2014
I love using cold brew in cocktails!

Emily K. July 12, 2014
I ADORE chocolate-covered espresso beans. Delicious!

Sharon M. July 12, 2014
Heard it can be used on steak. I want to give it a try.

Jason F. July 12, 2014
We cold brew it and make ice ream. Next batch I'm going to add stout!

Miranda S. July 12, 2014
Instead of pouring the coffee over ice cream, I make floats. Personally, I prefer espresso, so I put a small scoop of vanilla into a shot of espresso. It's a gorgeous sight when done in a clear glass. Even more so with a caramel sauce drizzle. : )

Jenn R. July 12, 2014
When I'm not drinking coffee, we use the grounds in our compost to help create some very rich soil for our garden. And sometimes in ice cream recipes!

Mary @. July 12, 2014
Strong coffee mixed with sweetened condensed milk makes for the simplest amazing Vietnamese coffee popsicles.

Ken B. July 12, 2014
I like to add a little to a pan deglazing liquid, it adds a good color and depth of flavor that most people don't recognize as coffee. And of course, i always throw the grounds into my compost pile.

Hannah G. July 12, 2014
In anything chocolate

Analucia July 12, 2014
I love espresso and uaing my espresso machine to experiment with other coffee drinks.
The left over coffee beans I use as fertilizer and the left over coffee as an eye bag remover using cotton circles. Coffee is present in every aspect of my life!

Zoe S. July 12, 2014
I love coffe, in so many forms... Coldbrew, Espresso, and I make "cowboy steak" for my family-- it's a rub of coffee, coarse salt, brown sugar, and cracked pepper. They love it!

Elizabeth July 12, 2014
I add coffee grounds to my bbq for my ribs and to my steaks as well. It adds depth and a bit of earthiness to it and really complements the other spices as well. Coffee grounds are a must for most meats on the 'que - from briskets to flanks, from beef to pork - it really kicks up the flavor!

Jamie F. July 12, 2014
I use coffee a lot in cooking. Fun way to see what foods work best with coffee and seeing what the outcome will be. I regularly make coffee beef stew which is amazing, coffee burgers, steaks.... All using brewed coffee of course!

Karen July 12, 2014
Hmm... coffee ice cream instead of milk in coffee! Also, coffee ice cubes and cafe latte ice cubes for iced coffee/coffee smoothies.

Chrissie V. July 12, 2014
Coffee ice cream all the way! Also as a rub for meat. Nom nom.

Suzanne C. July 12, 2014

SariS July 12, 2014
I use the coffee grounds in my plants. The Arabian jasmines love it!

Jócelyn F. July 12, 2014
I cook a lot with coffee and create (in my mind) elaborate coffee tastings. I like to step outside of the box and do things that I haven't seen before. My favorite thing ice done was create a coffee pasta dough, which I made ravioli with, stuffed with leeks pine nuts and ricotta, topped with a strawberry chili sauce. It was incredible.

enbe July 12, 2014
Iced in the morning and afternoon and always in chocolate cakes!

amber W. July 12, 2014
I love making a chicory coffee granita for a perfect summertime treat topped with a bourbon whipped cream!

Marissa July 12, 2014
I love using coffee for coffee cookies and as part of a rub for meats, especially roasts!

Jr0717 July 11, 2014
Ground and used for a good cup of ice cold cold-brew, sipped while slathering a pork shoulder with the remaining grounds, garlic, mustard, and herbs!

Emily L. July 11, 2014
I echo the comments about adding brewed coffee to chocolate cakes to accentuate the chocolate flavor. Espresso powder is great for creating coffee flavors, though. Homemade cold brew is also a summer favorite.

Hilary July 11, 2014
I re-used coffee grinds to make a homemade body scrub!
In the kitchen, I use it as a flavor-inhancer for homemade salmon gravlax.

TraciB July 11, 2014
I like to add it to my chocolate baked goods AND I make my own exfoliating scrub. A coffee scented shower is the best way to start the day!

Silvia N. July 11, 2014
I like to use half coffee/half almond milk in my banana protein shake. It tastes great & provides great post-workout recovery: 1/2 cup cold, strong, good quality coffee; 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1/2 frozen banana (or use fresh banana and add a few ice cubes), 1 scoop protein powder (18g+), 1 scoop stevia. Blend up and enjoy.

Kristen July 11, 2014
My 9 y/o just told me about a coffee "hair glow" treatment. I am curious, to say the least. That is something I will trying here soon!

Erin C. July 11, 2014
If I've got to work all night, I set a bag of freshly roasted coffee on my desk. The aromas of coffee are a wonder of their own!

rebeccac411 July 11, 2014
Sprinkle good ground coffee and honey on aged cheese. I saw Jamie Oliver do this on his show while I was living in London. I was skeptical. Honey, yes, but coffee on cheese? It's actually quite good, and I occasionally still do it--though maybe that's because it brings nice memories of a my cozy London kitchen.

citlalnahuac July 11, 2014
Ahh, good coffee… So many ways to use it beyond my morning cup.
Add some brewed coffee to any chocolate baked good, not enough for a distinct mocha flavor, just to richen the chocolate.
Mocha anything is, of course, also wonderful.
And I love affogato!
Make White Coffee Ice Cream: add about 1/4 c whole beans to the milk of your favorite vanilla ice cream recipe as you scald it, then let steep for 10-15 minutes before straining them out and continuing as usual. (Using whole beans means it doesn't turn brown.) Even non-coffee-lovers like this, and wonder why it's so much better than 'regular' vanilla.
Put the used grounds around tomato plants. Makes great mulch.

Pnutsmom July 11, 2014
I roast my own.....

summersavory July 11, 2014
I don't really drink coffee, but my dad got me hooked on coffee milk (a Rhode Island specialty that he became enamored of after a series of business trips to Providence) so I like to brew an extra strong pot and cook it down with a bit of sugar to make my own coffee syrup. A little bit stirred into whole milk gets you somewhere between extra light iced coffee and melted coffee ice cream (which is an excellent place to be, in my opinion)

Mona D. July 11, 2014
With above 90 degree temps in the usually temperate Pacific NW, I'm thinking iced coffee for sure.

vanessa G. July 11, 2014
I love it as a body scrub mixed with coconut oil, cinnamon and course coconut sugar. Exfoliates, softens and smell delicious :)

Katherine C. July 11, 2014
We make espresso the traditional way, in a moka pot, and make lattes at home. Iced coffee is another favorite, though, especially for Louisiana summers.

Megan July 11, 2014
After enjoying a cup of joe, the grounds are great for my compost!

Kate July 11, 2014
We melt chocolate over beans, let them cool, and pop them as desserts. Also, I use the grounds in my trash can with baking soda to get rid of built up smells. Sometimes too i put coffee beans in a basin with a candle, and when lit, it emits a delicious and subtle coffee aroma through my room :).

Food July 11, 2014
Coffee is actually pretty good in mole sauce :)

Alayne July 11, 2014
After a good cup of brewed coffee, I like to take the coffee grounds, slather them on my thighs, wrap with saran wrap, wait as long as I can, then rinse off in the shower! Voila! No more cellulite!

Andrea July 11, 2014
I love making cold brew concentrate: I can really taste the beans. I also love to add the coffee to ice cream (even at night). I have brined beef in it before which was delicious, but I never thought of using it on chicken. Maybe an African origin would do well there?

Elaine July 11, 2014
I like to make a layered coconut and coffee agar jello. Or coffee agar hello on sweet bean paste with cream poured over it.

jennifer July 11, 2014
Triple espresso 3 layer torte - bottom layer is a dense sponge cake, middle layer is mocha mousse, top layer is hazlenut cream - mocha ganache and candied hazlenut espresso bean praline candies on the top. Yum, yum, yum. By far, my most requested (and time consuming) dessert.

Pavel July 11, 2014
Drink a shot of cognac and bite a slice of lemon dipped in sugar and ground coffee. Its awesome.

Cori July 11, 2014
Coat pre-smoked slab bacon in it, smoke again and slice!

Susan C. July 11, 2014
Coffee with ice cream is one of my favorite ways, but straight up black coffee gets me going :)

Donna F. July 11, 2014
I love using coffee in baked goods as well as poured over coconut ice cream! I mix the coffee grounds with coconut oil for an absolutely dreamy body scrub too!

Luis July 11, 2014
I normally drink a cup or two of Americano during the morning or after eating lunch. Recently I have been making cold brew, and the occasional affogato or Tiramisù.

Tatiana H. July 11, 2014
There's just something about having a hot cup of freshly brewed coffee after dinner and always with dessert. Somehow it doesn't matter if it's chocolate or a fruit sorbet, coffee goes with any sweet for me!

Michael July 11, 2014
Cold strong coffee to marinate a pork loin

How I love coffee ice cream

IrishJenn July 11, 2014
Though I'm kind of a coffee lightweight (I drink cafe au lait on the rare occasion I drink coffee), you've listed my two favorite ways to have it - affogato and coffee ice cream (plain or in cake form).

PieceOfLayerCake July 11, 2014
I love to use sweetened coffee to soak chocolate cake. In addition to the instant espresso already in the cake, the coffee soak deepens the flavor even further...and of course builds a nice foundation for coffee buttercream. So....pretty much in every layer.

Cassieanne July 11, 2014
I use my coffee grounds to make a lovely exfoliater and we use them at our farmers market booth to let people smell between fragrances and products. Java and I have an all around great relationship! Xoxo

georgianna July 11, 2014
Firstly, there's Smitten Kitchen's AMAZING tiramisu cake :) http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/11/tiramisu-cake/
Secondly, keeping cold brew concentrate in the fridge during summer
And of course, the plain old ritual of a cup of coffee and good conversation

creamtea July 11, 2014
I brew (drip) directly into a glass of ice cubes for iced coffee. Several pourovers whil stirring the grounds in the cone makes a flavorful cup. Half-and-half or for a treat, whipped cream on top...I also add coffee to brownie batter and honey-cake -or gingerbread batter.

Rick G. July 11, 2014
I make dark beer infused with coffee or coffee infused liquors like Bourbon or vodka

Jeanean July 11, 2014
I'm a coffee lover but when I needed to stain the unfinished blond maple top of a kitchen island I recently purchased, I was looking for a food safe stain. Wet coffee grounds came to mind and I stained the top a beautiful brown color by scouring the top using the wet grounds. The wood "furred" a bit but I sanded it using a brown paper bag on my electric sander and now it's perfect in color and safe to cut on or make sandwiches or whatever.

Becky B. July 11, 2014
Love my iced cold brew! Drinking one right now :)

Joy July 11, 2014
Affogato of course!!

Lindsey July 11, 2014
If I happen to have coffee left over from my morning brew, I chill it in the fridge for a few hours then use it to make peanut butter & banana smoothies! The splash of coffee adds punch to an already great flavor combination, plus it perks me up a bit too!

drlbennett July 11, 2014
I working on perfecting my iced coffee. It also adds great depth to chocolate cakes.

Danielle B. July 11, 2014
I just got back from my first trip to Portland this week and amazingly enough I just discovered the awesomeness that is Stumptown Coffee. I brought back the Hair Bender blend for myself and as a gift for my parents. I've been freshly grinding it for my morning coffee but I plan on using it soon to add depth to a chocolate cake recipe and in homemade ice cream.

Jenny O. July 11, 2014
I love homemade coffee icecream. Thanks for the giveaway!

Katie Z. July 11, 2014
Besides a morning buzz and afternoon pick-me-up, this recipe is hands-down my favorite "other" use for coffee: https://food52.com/recipes/26819-espresso-banana-bread - It even gets me a free cup at my local coffee shop if I share! :)

benp July 11, 2014
I actually do #6 but the other way around: a scoop of vanilla ice cream dropped in my espresso. I guess both could be called an "affogato." Delicioso! :)

Posie (. July 11, 2014
ooh smart, like a hot coffee bath for your ice cream. wonder if I can legitimately pass that off as breakfast food..

Raisa B. July 11, 2014
I make tiramisu!

Michelle July 11, 2014
Love to use in baked goods, affogato, and as "potpourri"~

Diana July 12, 2014
Good on its own, as a marinate for meat, to make a sauce with, on top of ice cream and many more

Anne S. July 11, 2014
I add it to cuban chili to deepen the flavors and use the spent grounds as an exfoliating body scrub.

YES! to coffee in chili!

angeyu July 11, 2014
A morning cup is ritual, an affogato always hits the spot, and adding a touch of coffee in chocolate chip cookie dough never hurts.

Poppies A. July 11, 2014
Used to be medicine for long hours of studying...now its become a leisure summer time treat!

Laura B. July 11, 2014
I loooove pouring coffee over ice cream. Heaven on Earth. :)

Sue July 11, 2014
I love putting expresso in all my chocolate desserts - it really brings out the best in all of them! And I always bury my coffee grounds in my vegetable garden and in all my plants that love acidic soil.

JRod July 11, 2014
Mostly I drink coffee, but I also bake with it.

StaceyMoreno July 11, 2014
Nothing beats cold brew on a hot summer day!

gorzd July 11, 2014
dry rubs for chicken and pork

Jennifer Y. July 11, 2014
We put our spent coffee grounds--filter and all--into the compost, where they break down and join our kitchen scraps to create beautiful fertility for our garden.

Lisa July 11, 2014
I love coffee in all forms but I like to add to my gluten free chocolate chip muffins.

TerryMtz July 11, 2014
I love a good cold brew--especially during the summer!

EmFraiche July 11, 2014
I love a cup of light roast coffee with a Norwegian brown goats cheese called gjetost on toast. The flavors are so perfect together. I obviously need to branch out more in my use of coffee!

gracieloo July 11, 2014
I love to use coffee beans to jazz up banana muffins!

Mallory July 11, 2014
Always, always in chocolate cake and frosting.

Cee S. July 11, 2014
I use it when making my BBQ sauce for BBQ tempeh or barbecued chickpea pizza.

Shannon R. July 11, 2014
I always add a tablespoon or two of finely ground coffee into brownie batter. Yum!

Tiffany July 11, 2014
Cold brewed is the way to go.

Tiffany July 11, 2014
I also compost the leftover grounds and will occasionally coffee dye yarn and fabric.

Alex H. July 11, 2014
Dry Rub on pork.

Talia July 11, 2014
to buzz up my banana bread, I always add in some espresso. same with frosting!

Arina July 11, 2014
Pure cold brewed coffee - It's a lot less acidic than hot brewed coffee, and the flavour is more mellow, as well. Delicious as is, or put some vanilla ice cream or gelato in a cup and pour over the coffee and create a cold version of affogato. Mmm.

Caroline July 11, 2014
I love coffee in baked goods, and you can't go wrong with dark chocolate-covered espresso beans as a decoration (and snack!)

mrslarkin July 11, 2014
I recently added a few spoonfuls of finely ground espresso beans to my bbq pork rub. Yum!

Frank July 11, 2014
Concentrated and then used as the base for a flank marinade.

Cassandra H. July 11, 2014
My father would throw in a few green (unroasted) coffee beans into the pot to tenderise meat.

Posie (. July 11, 2014
That is so cool! Never heard of that and definitely going to try it.

scruz July 11, 2014
i like to add some to beef or lamb stew....also chili. it gives a nice depth.

Panfusine July 11, 2014
Even though I don't make it that often, I have a weakness for Ginger infused coffee. Its perfect for nippy Autumn mornings

Norma July 11, 2014
I mix used coffee grounds with olive oil to make an exfoliating scrub.

Panfusine July 11, 2014
That sounds like a superb Capital Idea! thanks!

Hailey7 July 11, 2014
I'm suddenly discovering the depth of flavor in really good, dark coffee. I love to use the leftover grounds from my French press to make a fabulous black coffee ice cream. My family loves it so much we don't even mind getting a caffeine buzz at 9pm!

aargersi July 11, 2014
For sweet - Nannydeb's prune coffee cake:
https://food52.com/recipes/11334-prune-coffee-cake
For savory - coffee + chili + chocolate = meat marinade heaven!!

Adrenalyne July 11, 2014
Besides my morning espresso ritual, the used coffee grounds make a great hand scrub.

Jeff July 11, 2014
Apart from grinding to drink coffee - I like to add coffee grounds to meat rubs for the bbq.

cblanchard July 11, 2014
I really like using coffee in brewing. Stouts and porters are the obvious ones. I homebrew an Irish stout with coffee and bourbon that friends enjoy. But I've had a homebrewed IPA with coffee. I was skeptical, but it tasted great.

Christine K. July 11, 2014
I'm old school with a nice (and big) cup of coffee in the morning! Love Stumptown!

Allison July 11, 2014
My favorite way to use coffee is... as a lovely morning ritual. I love the process of boiling water, grinding the beans, and waiting for them to brew in my french press. Second favorite way - cheap office coffee as an afternoon pick-me-up!

Lori D. July 11, 2014
Coffee concentrate! So I don't have to wait for it to brew in the morning.

Jessie J. July 11, 2014
I live on iced coffee all summer, but there's coffee ice cream on my to-do list too...

LLStone July 11, 2014
Iced coffee!

Catherine S. July 11, 2014
I'm really odd. I drink terrible coffee at work, but I save my best coffee grounds for cakes and to use as face exfoliators! The caffeine does something wonderful for your skin (so says Pinterest). But really, I use coffee to enhance chocolate. I would love to experiment with coffee spice rubs!

Posie (. July 11, 2014
beauty & caffeine all in one. love it

Gibson2011 July 11, 2014
Aside from simple coffee, something like Cuban Coffee Creme Brulee is really good.

cristen July 11, 2014
My favorite way to use coffee is that first cup in the AM from a french press or pour over. Additionally, I love it in a batch of espresso caramels I make during the holidays.

Laura C. July 11, 2014
Coffee Ice cubes!!

Linn July 11, 2014
Definitely brownies or chocolate cake!

Courtney B. July 11, 2014

latkelet July 11, 2014
Shakerato - shaken iced coffee.

Maja L. July 11, 2014
Desserts but especially chocolate cake batter.

MartiC July 11, 2014
My main use of coffee is to wake me up...iced in the summer, hot in the winter. I also have a nice coffee rub for grilling that I like.

SuzannahJane July 11, 2014
In the morning of course but leftovers in post run workout shake :)

snowcitygirl July 11, 2014
Coffee + spices + brown sugar = some absolutely amazing rubs! It's one of my go-to's when I'm not sure what to do when presented with pork chops, and coffee is a star ingredient in my new favorite rib recipe: https://food52.com/recipes/21976-coffee-crusted-bbq-beef-ribs

amysarah July 11, 2014
Maybe boring, but #1 will always be the essential morning cup - little milk, no sugar. In warm weather, I love Granita di Caffe (perfect dessert, with a little whipped cream on top.)

amysarah July 11, 2014
How could I have forgotten (considering I just drank one today!) - Vietnamese iced coffee. Perfect sweet caffeine jolt when you're starting to drag on a hot humid day.

Matthew M. July 11, 2014
Coffee-flavoring homemade ice cream. Yum.

Joy H. July 11, 2014
I love making magical cold brew coffee. I've adapted it to make orange mocha frappuccino and pumpkin spice lattes. And I've used coffee to make a Tim Tam Slam ice cream (broken Tim Tams in a coffee ice cream)!

Meghan July 11, 2014
So far, the only way I use coffee is to make hot or iced coffee for my guy. I can't drink coffee without getting seriously anxious! I do love tiramisu, though, so I should try that out at some point!

MRTK July 11, 2014
Well, in my home, inevitably at least one bean per bag slips to the floor and immediately becomes a cat toy. Does that count?
