It seems like just yesterday when I was ranking each new food emoji Apple rolled out last December, but here we are again. Two days ago, the Unicode Consortium, the governing body dictating what emojis get ushered onto our smartphone keyboards, announced it’d likely be rolling out 69 new emojis come June.

They include 13 new food and drink emoji. Rough drafts of what these will look like upon finalization are visible on Emojipedia's website.

They include offerings that I’m stunned weren’t available before, like coconut and broccoli. There’s also a soft pretzel, a sandwich, a slab of meat, “bowl with spoon” (ah, yes—my favorite dish), a dumpling that looks like a clamshell, “canned food,” a fortune cookie that resembles a pale crustacean with a white tail, a takeout box, a pie with steam billowing from its creases, “cup with straw,” and a glimmering pair of red chopsticks.

All in all, these are swell additions to our ever-evolving digital vocabulary. But you’ve got to wonder on the timing on Unicode’s part. This news broke mere hours before the release of our latest Burnt Toast episode on the very subject of how one lobbies for certain emoji to become part of your digital keyboard.

Hm. Interesting that chief among these proposed additions is a pie, the very subject of our latest podcast episode. Coincidence? Kismet? Unclear. In any case, use this news as a reminder to give our episode a listen if you haven’t.
