Have you ever found yourself futzing around with the plates on the table at a dinner out, kind of in the middle of everyone's conversation, and you still can't get your Instagram just right? And so you just abandon the whole project, photo-less with a little frowny-smile and a few sorrys to your compatriots for interrupting? (Not like I've been there or anything. Except, oh yeah, I have.)

Well, our stylists—yep, the ones who work on our editorial and video shoots, and cookbooks, too—shared a few of their secrets for getting that shot to look like you took a lot of time, and had a lot of fancy equipment (but we can't promise you won't fall into your friend sitting next to you trying to nab a corner of their plate, too).

Here are our stylists' top five tips for getting the right shot in any restaurant, even in low light:

1. Overhead is the safest option, always.

2. Try to create a strong direct source of light—like, drag the candle on your table close to your plate of food. It will add nice shadow.

3. Add environment: Show some of the table, a chair, maybe even a person. It'll place your food in a landscape that makes it being in the dark make more sense.

4. Try not to get yourself and your shadow in the photo. Look for the light source and move around it so you're not in it.

5. Don't fear, there's always a filter to fix stuff.
