Is This the Most Umami-Rich Burger Ever?

September  9, 2018

We’ve partnered with Ajinomoto Co. Inc. to bring you our latest contest—your best umami-rich recipe. Read on for all the savory, delicious details.

Since the very start, we’ve called the umami recipe contest our most savory one yet. When we opened submissions, we asked you to bring that something-something flavor that we wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about. And boy, did you ever:

We received the most recipes of any contest so far this year. These featured everything from mushrooms and anchovies to miso and soy sauce—oh, and looooots of meat. In fact, two of our top five semifinalists were burgers, and went on to be our top two.

Shop the Story

That’s right: battle of the burgers.

On one side, you have mrslarkin’s Umami Meatloaf Burger with a too-good-for-words ketchup (Worcestershire! Fish sauce! Soy sauce! Miso!). On the other, inpatskitchen’s Savory Mushroom Turkey Burger to turn you (yes, you!) into a turkey burger believer.

But there can only be one winner. Give it up for…

Congrats, mrslarkin! We’ll never make burgers or ketchup the same way again.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who submitted and made this contest so dang fun. Stay tuned for a Q&A with mrslarkin, where we’ll ask her all about this winning recipe.

Shortly after that, we’ll announce our next contest theme. It is ingredient-focused—and something we’re really excited about baking (and cooking!) with this time of year. (Oh no, have I said too much?)

Share your congrats for [mrslarkin] in the comments!
