When we picked our latest contest theme Your Best Retro Recipe With a Modern Twist, we were looking for some creative and delicious, modern twists to the retro recipes of years gone by. From salads suspended in jellies to elevated or globally influenced classics, we cooked and ate our way through a dozen intriguing finalists.
With so many delicious recipes to choose from, it wasn't an easy choice, but we narrowed it down to two: Mrs. Larkin's Caesar and the Goddess, a delightful, modern update of the iconic salad, packed with vibrant flavor, and Dan Carberg's Far East of Chicken Kiev, a deeply aromatic dish with a creative compound butter.
Picking a winner is never an easy task, especially with two amazing and delicious recipes, but thanks to our awesome community and a huge outpouring of votes, we have chosen a winner. Cue the drumroll....
Congratulations Liz, your salad was unanimously loved by all. We also want to congratulate the runner-up, Dan, your recipe was delicious and we highly recommend it. Liz Larkin is a longtime Food52 Community member and has won more than a few contests—we can always depend on the Scone Lady of Pound Ridge to dazzle us with a delicious recipe.

I have loved to cook for as long as I can remember, am self taught learning as I go. I come from a large Italian family and food was at the center of almost every gathering. My grandfather made his own wine and I remember the barrels of wine in the cellar of my grandfathers home, I watched my mother and aunts making homemade pasta and remember how wonderful it was to sit down to a truly amazing dinner. Cooking for me is a way to express myself its my creative outlet. I enjoy making all types of food but especially enjoy baking,
I live in Brooklyn, NY, and I share my home with my two dogs Izzy and Nando.
I like to collect cookbooks and scour magazines and newspapers for recipes. I hope one day to organize them.
