Of all the plant-based milks out there (almond, coconut, soy, the list goes on and on), oat milk is by far the best of the bunch due to its superiorly creamy texture, generally non-cardboard taste, and ability to froth well for an espresso-based sip. Though I'm generally a whole milk drinker, I'll occasionally order an oat milk latte or stock up on a carton of the stuff when I feel like I need a little break from traditional dairy.
So the latest FDA recall alert absolutely caught my attention, considering it involves my (and seemingly everyone else's) favorite oat milk company, coffee, and a slew of other plant-based and nutritional beverages. Yep, your beloved Oatly oat milk is part of a massive voluntary recall from Lyons Magnus LLC of 53 products with potential microbial contamination—including from the organism Cronobacter sakazakii, which can cause fever, vomiting, and urinary tract infection.
That means you might need to toss your Oatly Oat-Milk Barista Edition, as well as beverages from popular brands like Stumptown (their Cold Brew Coffee With Oat Milk Original and Cold Brew Coffee With Cream & Sugar Chocolate, among others, are recalled), Intelligentsia, Lyons Ready Care, Lyons Barista Style, Pirq, Glucerna Original, and others. No illnesses have been reported yet, but you'll want to cross-check labels, lot codes, and "best by" dates with the full lineup of affected products and make sure not to consume anything on the FDA list.
If your near-daily consumption of oat milk or pre-blended coffee beverages are affected by this massive FDA recall, you can still get your fix by making your own plant-based milk at home. DIY oat milk is especially low-lift since it requires very little soaking time and only needs two ingredients: water (filtered will taste best) and old-fashioned rolled oats, which are probably sitting in your pantry. The best part about homemade plant-based milk: you can flavor it however you like—we love adding a dash of maple syrup, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt to ours, but you could even go the chocolate route with cocoa powder.
