Not Sad Desk Lunch

Bring Your Fancy Pantry Items to the Office

January  7, 2014

As a defiant response to Sad Desk Lunches, the Food52 team works to keep our midday meals both interesting and pretty. Each week, we'll be sharing our happiest desk lunches -- and we want to see yours, too.

Today: Food52's Assistant Editor Marian Bull suggests you keep work lunches interesting by stocking your office with flavorful vinegars, condiments, and spices. Her go-to? La Boîte's Breeze N. 5

How to spice up your office pantry -- from Food52

Shop the Story

You know how you got lots of novel food gifts over the holidays, like vinegars and syrups and spice blends galore? And you haven't used them yet?

Bring them to the office.

At the office, your kumquat-ghost chile marmalade will be a welcome update to your plain turkey sandwich, and that obscure Slovenian wine vinegar will add pizzaz to salads lacking in said pizzaz. You can pack unexciting lunches and then bam! they will become exciting when you open the magical file cabinet of treasures you use as a pantry.

Breeze! Breeze on Food52

I promise that nobody is paying me to write this, but one of my favorite food items is a spice blend from La Boite called Breeze. I sprinkle it atop my avocado toast and my ricotta toast; its notes of anise and tea transport my palate to far off places! I want everyone to have this experience. I suggest you try it.

Abracadabra, alakazam, you just made a really good lunch.

Oh, sad desk lunches indeed! I usually try pretty hard re: home-packed lunches, but lately I've been stuck on Larabars. Just a Larabar. So maybe it's time yo take your advice :)
