Dog biscuits

Genius recipe suggestions or not, I'd love a good recipe for dog biscuits. I'd love to give some for Christmas gifts and make some for the lovely Esmé and Poppy.

Thanks, hla and sdb. Several dogs are going to be very grateful to you both!

Here's the recipe I've got:

1 cup AP flour
1 cup wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 t salt
1 t brewer's yeast
6 T chilled bacon drippings
1/2 cup dry milk
1 egg
1/2 cup water

Blend dry ingredients, then cut in fat as for pastry dough. Beat egg and stir it into the mixture. Add water, stirring, only until you can gather it into a stiff dough. Knead for 2 to 3 minutes (until smooth.) Roll 1/2-thick. Cut with a bone-shaped cutter. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 325º for about 25 minutes (until brown.)

Peanut butter and grated carrots and apples are great additions also.

Thanks, hla! Food allergies don't have anything to do with it; I just wanted to make them as a novelty gift for my own two, and for friends with dogs.

Hi, B! I have a recipe for dog biscuits in a book of homemade gifts. It uses wheat and dairy, so not ideal if you are concerned about food allergies. The top 5 food allergens for dogs (if memory serves) are beef, wheat, corn, chicken, and dairy. If you want to create your own I'd consider sweet potato, potato, oats, rice flour, etc... Also stay away from grapes, raisins, onions, to a lesser degree garlic, chocolate (obviously), and macadamia nuts.

Joanne Chang's Flour cookbook has one as does the Rebar cookbook.
