What will make your Negroni distinctive is trying different sweet vermouths, because that is where the herbal flavors are. Take pierino's classic recipe and, instead of old standbys like Martini & Rossi or Cinzano, try Carpana Antica Formula (my favorite) or Punt e Mes (both from Italy), or Vya (from California).
The Negroni was the cocktail of the Futurists in Italy. Equal parts gin (Hendricks recommended), Campari, sweet vermouth with a few drops of bitters. Orange peel to garnish (optional).
