It's a type of lettuce - also referred to as lamb's lettuce or corn salad.

it does not have an accent on the e. it is pronounced mahsh. i was taken to task by a French chef on this about a month ago.
it is indeed a soft lettuce or green. delicate texture and taste

The mache I have growing in my garden is not at all delicate - it has the texture of young spinach and has a unique nutty flavor. It is a wonderful green.

It is also seasonal--so buy it when you see it. I like it with a simple oil and vinegar dressing with just a touch of honey or sweet mustard, a bit of shallot, and a few nuts.
