I don't want to use canned tomatoes... What's the closest thing to it?

Alexia1996 - peeled fresh tomatoes should be great in your soup. Greenstuff suggested using Romas.

Fresh tomatoes, and I agree better to peel them, would be the best substitute. But I am curious, why do you not want to use canned tomatoes?

In a soup. The recipe calls for a 14 oz can whole peeled tomatoes with their juice
