how long will a butternut squash last

I found a really nice firm butternut squash and have left it out on the counter for the last few days. How long can I get away with this , or should it be refrigerated?

They will last a long time but don't need to be refrigerated if you can keep it in a cool place; shouldn't be in direct sunlight
