Completely agree with the big list above & the Perla's suggestion! Absolutely LOVE Uchiko, probably one of my top 10 restaurants. Also, for an unbelievable steak & escargot I'd say Austin Land & Cattle off or Lamar. Don't get that confused with Texas Land & Cattle ;)

Check Eater-Austin, http://austin.eater.com/, the food section of the Austin Chronicle, http://www.austinchronicle.com/food/, and the Austin American-Statesman, http://www.austin360.com/s/food-drink/. Also, Texas Monthly just hired a BBQ editor (http://www.tmbbq.com/) so check out the Central Texas BBQ trail. And then there are the food trucks...

Perla's has the most fantastic grilled Brussels sprouts. Food trucks in Austin are fun too!

Wink - 11th and Lamar. This is a small bites place that is always out of this world.
Uchi - unbelievable sushi. This place gets written up in all the national pubs, and deservedly so. Also check out Uchiko, its newish baby sister.
La Condesa - in the 2nd St. District. La Condesa is fun and good vibe-y with terrific food.
Lambert's - across the street from La Condesa, it's "fancy barbecue." NOT for anyone with a vegetarian bent.
Manuel's - Mexican, been there since the 80's. Still great food. 3rd and Congress
Fonda San Miguel - also there forever. Still rockin' interior Mex. They used to have a terrific Sunday brunch and might still
Vespaio - upscale italian on South Congress. Always good.
Enoteca Vespaio - more casual next door. Gnocchi is unreal. Also, get a side of the fried chickpeas.
Home Slice - pizza joint on South Congress. Epicenter of Austin coolness.
Torchy's Tacos - There's one just north of campus. Try the green chile pork, the fried avocado, or the trailer park. Great place to see a bunch of college-aged slacker kids. 2801 Guadalupe, across the street from Dirty's (burgers) which is also a revered Austin institution.
Sushi Niichi - on 24th, just West of Rio Grande, in an old 7-11.
Chuy's on Barton Springs - Just 'cuz. It's SO old Austin. Mexican food
Arturo's - on 17th, between Guadalupe and Lavaca. GREAT breakfast tacos.

I really liked Uchi when I was there a few years ago. If you're a barbecue fan, I'd highly recommend driving out to Lockhart for Smitty's or Kreuz (or both). Probably the best meal of my life was at Smitty's.
