Thanks, ladies, I tried the soda and it actually helped. Most effective to rub directly on the potato. What helped the most was using Kangen microclustered alkaline water which has great penetrating power.

When I come across a really dirty potato, I use a brush like pegreen, but I do it under running water.

Just use a stiff brush on dry potatoes to get the dirt off. Then wash them off in some water.
