I know this is too late, but maybe for theme to special occasion... On NYE I made up a champagne cocktail that was a surprising hit: Put a cube of Demerara sugar in the bottom of a champagne flute Cover it (plus a splash more) with Snap liqueur Top it off with a nice dry champagne or champagne-style bubbly. Enjoy! PS Snap is a spiced ginger liqueur - recently picked up a bottle on a whim I think I will call this drink the Snap 15!
The Food52 main site has a sub-heading, "What's on our table". Look under "Cocktails". Loads of festive concoctions! Bourbon, Orange and Ginger won the most recent contest for cocktails.
I just posted this recipe for a Cranberry Gin Smash on my blog: http://www.hungryinlove.com/blog/2014/12/23/cranberry-gin-smash
If you're not a gin drinker, vodka could easily stand in. Super easy but the rosemary sprigs speared with cranberry make it very festive. And bringing the garnish to your nose each time you take a sip is just glorious!
I'm not a cocktail drinker but I love this from Seattle's Toulouse Petit restaurant: White or rosado Cava (inexpensive, high-quality Spanish sparkler), real orange juice and Grand Marnier. Just typing it out makes me want one.
