For the future, they are extremely easy to grow...no pests...have grown them in NJ and DE. A pain to pick because of the thorns. And you have to pluck off both the stem and blossom end which takes time. But easy to freeze and they make wonderful pies and jams. I have only seen them once at a farmer's market. They (and currants) are host to a white pine rust (or something like that) so you can't grow if you live near white pines, which is probably why they are so hard to find (plus not many know of them outside of Brits.

There have been immune and resistant varieties around for quite some time, and I was able to grow currents and gooseberries in Massachusetts in the 1980s, right in the midst of a white-pine woods. But I think you're indirectly right--people pretty much forgot about them in the US when federal and state governments banned them from the early 1900s to the 1960s.

What an interesting question. Never saw them on freezer dept of USA or Canada groceries. However, a quick Google search shows them at amazon.com, various CSAs (especially in Pacific Northwest) and grocery stores in the UK. So it depends on where you are. Search and you shall find...
