The huaraches I know are made with the same masa as tortillas, but are thicker and oval shaped with a filling of bean puree- toppings are placed, appropriately enough, on top.
It's a Mexican flatbread with toppings, similar to a taco, but with flatbread instead of a tortilla.
The name ("sandal") refers to the sole-like shape and thickness of the flatbread.
It has yet to receive heavy marketing by mainstream U.S. corporate chains (like Yum! Brand's Taco Bell) and remains more of a niche offering from mom-and-pop Mexican restaurants in larger U.S. metropolitan areas.
