Will pure vanilla extract work ?

I don't think that would work, unfortunately, since butter (mostly fat) doesn't like to mix with liquids. If that's all you can get, you could experiment with stirring some vanilla into a little simple sugar syrup, which might blend into the butter easier, as vanilla paste does.
