You can't go wrong with sdebrango's contest-winning Tender Yellow Cake is a wonderful base for a good birthday cake; I've made it frequently as the cake for Boston Cream Pie (she also has a Boston Cream Pie variation. You can do any basic Crème Patissière for the filling: https://food52.com/recipes/11618-tender-yellow-cake. You can find the pastry cream from her Boston Cream Pie recipe here: https://food52.com/recipes/12124-boston-cream-pie-with-kahlua-ganache. You can do the chocolate ganache with or w/o the Kahlua or, if your daughter doesn't like chocolate, perhaps go for a caramel or butterscotch topping or a plain vanilla buttercream.
