My friend is gluten-free, but also allergic to nuts. I’m guessing that the ground nuts are integral to this recipe. But is there any nut free option?

Have a look at this recipe if your eater can tolerate/will consume seeds (sesame) and eggs. I find tahini works very well in both savory and sweet dishes.

The recipe is based on this one. https://food52.com/recipes/21007-alice-medrich-s-best-cocoa-brownies. I've successfully made it with Cup4Cup gluten free flour blend. And I love the seed idea, too.

Perhaps you can try pumpkin or sunflower seeds...

Wow thanks for your prompt response! Sometimes I wonder if there’s anyone “out there.” That sounds like a great idea, and I’ll be open to any other suggestions, and/or tried-and-true substitutions as well.

Another idea: beans, lentils possibly? There are a lot of recipes for black bean brownies.
