Formal Stainless Steel Silverware

I have always hand-washed my formal stainless steel silverware and stored it separately to keep it from being scratched or damaged. However, its over 30 years old, and now I have these fine dull surface scratches that I'm trying to get rid of. I'm afraid to use any toxic chemicals for fear of damaging the silverware but do you know of any way I could get rid of the surface scratches safely?
