Can you add vegetarian bacon or something else vegetarian for the salty flavor?

HLA hit the nail on the head.  You certainly sub something else for that salty flavor, but it won't taste like bacon!

I don't see why not.  Won't be the same, but should add a similar flavor.  My vegetarian sister loves the fake bacon, so I'm sure she'd approve.
