what is aleppo pepper and what can I use to sub for it?

Aleppo pepper is a variety of chili powder used in middle eastern cuisine.. Wikipedia's entry seems to be pretty informative..Hope it helps!

As a spice for heat you can substitute ancho chili powder...if you just want smokiness or color, then add paprika.
