A frosting recipe calls for creaming the butter and powdered sugar. What does that mean?

It's a good idea to start with butter that's softened somewhat--i.e. taken out of the fridge a little ahead of time.

Ideally, you'd want to use an electric mixer or hand beaters, but you can do it with a wooden spoon if you're feeling strong!
