I've read about black walnuts but never had an opportunity to cook with them. Any ideas/experience/favorite recipes?
Meg is a trusted home cook.
There's a really amazing black walnut ice cream recipe in the new cookbook by Jeni Britton Bauer (Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home). I also remember my grandmother making a fabulous black walnut cake with a cream cheese frosting. To replicate this, I recommend making the Coconut Pecan Cake in the 2006 edition of the Joy of Cooking and simply replacing the pecans and coconut with chopped black walnuts.
Thank you, Jeni's book has come up in so many conversations and a friend brought me Baked Apple Sorbet. Will be putting the book on my Christmas list.
i've always wanted to try making these:
thanks for reminding me!
I have a bumper crop of black walnuts. I just loaded a recipe for maple black walnut fudge. I'll be curious if anyone else has ideas, as these are a rather unusual ingredient.
