Why boil potatoes rather than steam?

I am wondering why the basic method for cooking potatoes for mashed potatoes, potato salad, etc. is to boil them. Why not steam?

I find that steaming keeps the potatoes firmer. For mashed, you want them nice and soft, so boiling is better. FYI - I always steam my potatoes for potato salad. I'll typically use red or yukon gold potatoes for salad...
