The first time I took a pickleback shot, the brine came from a Costco-sized jar of generic brine and the whiskey was one step up from a plastic bottle. You could make this classier by using artisanal pickles and small-batch whiskey. Or you could not. —Marian Bull

Ingredients
  • 1 ounce whiskey
  • 1 ounce pickle juice
Directions
  1. Pour whiskey into a shot glass.
  2. Pour pickle juice into a shot glass.
  3. Take a shot of whiskey. Chase with pickle juice. Repeat as necessary.

Tried this tonight with my homemade pickles and like them better with vodka-I also reuse my pickle juice per Food52 and add red onion, red/yellow pepper strips and Romaine "stalks"-so good. However, I had made pickled cherries last summer and I liked that very much with the bourbon-but I will buy more pickles to try it again!
