7 Recipes Just Like Mom Made Them

May  8, 2015

For every time our mothers bandaged our knobby knees, put up with our worst tantrums, and let us have that last piece of pie—even when she really wanted it—we'd like to say "thank you." This year, like every year, we get to celebrate the women who raised us, and what better a way to honor them than by cooking their recipes (and letting them have the last bite)? Here are 7 recipes inspired by the women who raised us—the aunts, grandmas, and like-a-second-mother-mothers:

My Mom one special recipe was her Date Nut Pudding, and I cannot find the correct recipe anywhere! She would make it for me, and me alone, every Christmas! It was always served with sweetened whipping cream.

I can't decide whether it was the liver and onions, the canned baked beans with canned brown bread or the minute "cubed" steak.

Nope, Sorry my Mom never made any of that stuff. It was German or Italian. Dads 3 rules. (1) Meat with every meal. (2) No left overs. (3) No casseroles. To this day I have never had left overs or a casserole. Those where the only 3 things that I asked The Love Of My Life to do for me.

It was Grandma who cooked while Mom worked...we got American standards like meatloaf and mashed potatoes, turkey tetrazinni, baked egg custard, and the like. These examples seem exotic to me, lol!

My mom, the Grandma Virginia in the Fried Chicken recipe above, died two years ago. Seeing her recipe here is a comfort. My daughter has been asking me what I want for Mother's Day dinner. I think Grandma Virginia's Fried Chicken is the perfect memory of my mom for tomorrow! Thank you.

No matter how much food has been served, I really feel like I haven't eaten on Thanksgiving if this dressing isn't part of the meal. https://food52.com/recipes/7193-flora-s-cornbread-dressing
This dressing was made for numerous occasions including "Sunday Dinner" for decades by my "Other Mother," Flora Hayden. All the children she gave birth to agree that my version comes the closest to hers. That makes me feel very special. It really is the best dressing I know , and nothing fancy. Try it and see. :D
