Merrill's daughter Clara has quite the appetite -- and it's all Merrill can do to keep up. Armed with her greenmarket bag, a wooden spoon and a minimal amount of fuss, she steps into the fray.
Today: 7 ideas for homemade snacks, just in time for back-to-school season.
The days are getting noticeably shorter, and we all know what that means: time to prepare ourselves once again for the routine of fall and back-to-school. For Clara, school (which we refer to as "class") means two to three hours of jumping around, singing songs, playing with blocks and just generally causing mayhem with 10 other two-year-olds. And this only happens three days a week, so it's not exactly rigorous.
Still, a kid needs her snacks. Clara has spent all of her time with us over the past couple of weeks, and thus has been eating what we eat. If we're munching on tortilla chips and guac, that's Clara's snack too. Pretzels and hummus, strawberry ice pops, homemade chocolate chip cookies? Check. But now I need to get organized again and make sure we're stocked for the weeks ahead with back-to-school snacks.
Here are some of my -- and Clara's -- favorite things to have around for snacks. Some of them are even able to do double duty as meals if you're so inclined.
Apple Chips
Blueberry, Oatmeal and Flaxseed Muffins
Potato Cakes with Broccoli and Cheese
Homemade Yogurt
Herbed Butternut Squash Chips
Carrot Muffins
Trail Mix with Cherries and Chocolate
