Totally agree. I travel across town every few years to pick up a roll. It's cheaper and more environmentally responsible than the commonly picked Ziploc bags. I would also add to this list masking tape and a sharpee pen to label items. Can't live without it in a restaurant and shouldn't at home. How else do you differentiate between that glorious pizza sauce and plain tomato sauce?

I'm so glad to see others commenting about the environmental impact of plastic wrap. One of my favorite things about my kitchen is when I'm in it reflecting on how often I'm maintaining a culinary tradition my grandmother or great-grandmother would have acted out in her kitchen - waiting for the bread to rise, canning jam in glass jars, pickling watermelon rinds or cherries to waste less and be able to enjoy summer flavors in the winter, et cetera. I'd love to see an article about how cheese was stored 100 years ago.

As a former cheese merchant, I know what you're talking about, and you're right. It's great stuff. However, my use of purchased wraps is now as close to zero as possible. My plastic wrap is from mushroom packages and other produce, and other freebies when the unpackaged is not an option.
My other observation about working behind the cheese counter: when you cut a piece of cheese for a customer, it's amazing how accurate you can get with experience, coming very close to the requested 1 pound from a 40 lb. wheel...

Yes, there is a big difference in plastic wrap as well as aluminum foil, plastic zip bags and even paper bags. I use it only when I don’t have a storage container for the item I want to store. That is rare but does happen. I try and use what can be recycled; aluminum foil, plastic and paper bags.
