Contrary to popular belief, the history of the Carnival celebrations in the U.S. did not begin in New Orleans.

Louisiana still had Alabama beat. On Mardi Gras Day, March 3, 1699, Iberville landed at a spot near the mouth of the Mississippi River and named it Point du Mardi Gras. I am sure there was some partying had.

I celebrate Mobile for having the first Mardi Gras. Will the writer also celebrate that
New Orleans has a great history and does not need to compete with Mobile. New Orleans is where did jazz music started. New Orleans has the only jazz culture in the world. New Orleans has the only second line jazz and brass band culture in the world. New Orleans had Congo Square. The only place in the US Where people of African descent could participate in their culture. New Orleans has the only African American tribal cultures tied to African and Native Americans. New Orleans has the only authentic African American jazz funerals. New Orleans is where gumbo, ettoufee, and jambalaya were invented. New Orleans is the only place that invented and still has Creole and Cajun dishes. New Orleans is where Rock & Roll was formed. New Orleans has the French Quarter. New Orleans makes 1 billion dollars from Mardi Gras every year. New Orleans has the biggest, best and most imitated jazz festival in the world. New Orleans has created more of the greatest musicians per capita than Mobiĺe. And this is just the tip if the iceberg.

Now Donald, you made your point, let the poor man have Mobile and it’s Mardi Gras. We all know which city is synonymous with Mardi Gras and we all know why, there is no better place. He apparently does not know what it means to miss New Orleans, I certainly do!

I am a Mobile native and current Alabama resident. I also work in branding and can only say that while Rolex wasn't the first company to make a watch, they were the first company to make a watch a luxury item. It doesn't matter who did it first. What matters is who did it best. ;)

"Mobile has long been overshadowed by New Orleans, a larger city by volume and its nature more subdued."
I don't know that I would describe New Orleans as "more subdued" than Mobile; I used to live in NOLA, and "subdued" is not an adjective that comes to mind whenever I think of the Crescent City. :>)
