Cornbread—a delicious, baked combination of cornmeal and water developed by Native Americans long before any belt-buckle-shoe-wearing expat stumbled upon this continent—rocks. Great alongside salt-crusted meat (like this dry brined turkey), better as the vessel with which you shovel green beans face-wards, and best slathered in butter, toasted in a cast-iron, then, again, slathered in butter, cornbread belongs within any holiday spread. Especially if it’s moist, crisp, and packed with flavor—qualities present in all of these five cornbread recipes.

1. Cast-Iron Skillet Cornbread

After sampling this recipe from Community member Cratecooking, our former editors left the following review: “This cornbread has it all—it's slightly tangy from buttermilk, gluten-free thanks to 100% cornmeal, sweet from maple syrup, and, of course, just-crispy-enough from its hot skillet (which also earns it major style points).”

2. Cracklin’ Cornbread

This recipe comes from Sean Brock, a James Beard Award-winning chef whose Charleston, South Carolina restaurant, Husk, is revered for its cornbread. Point being: You can trust this guy.

3. Jalapeño Cornbread With Corn

Recipe developer Renae Wilson puts it best: “In this cheesy, spicy spin on my classic base recipe, chopped fresh jalapeños, cubes of full-fat cream cheese, and freshly shorn corn kernels stud a grainy, hardy crumb that’s rounded out by slightly salty, tangy buttermilk.”

4. Hot Honey Cornbread

Somehow, this cornbread—which you can see below—tastes better than it looks. Honey, jalapeños, corn kernels flavor an impossibly luxurious interior—providing your guests perfect cornbread bite, after perfect cornbread bite.

5. Andouille Sausage & Cornbread Stuffing

A cold, but correct take: Cornbread stuffing is the best stuffing. Especially when Andouille sausage and plenty of sage and rosemary join the party.
