6 Hosting Tips for When You Don’t Feel Like Hosting

Oh no, did the doorbell just ring?

Welcome to the latest edition of Come On Over, Food52 editorial director Julie Vadnal's newsletter that's all about hosting gatherings big and small—without losing your cool. Got company? Sign up here for her emails.

It’s been a long year, right? And I sincerely hope you’re getting a much-deserved break from hosting. But also—these lazy days sandwiched between two holidays always seem to be the time when neighbors, family, and friends pop by to say hello. What do you do when the doorbell rings and you’re still in your pajamas at 3 p.m.? Here’s how I host when I don’t really feel like hosting.

1. Don't Panic

It’s easy to get self-conscious about your home, your outfit, your hair—but remember that they’re here to see you, and no one expects a lot this time of year. Throwing on this cozy robe always makes me feel more put together, though.

2. Keep a Stash of Gifts

Your pop-in visitors might even bring gifts. (What monsters!) That’s why I keep a box of scented candles—I personally think candles are great gifts—and ribbons in my home office. That way, when I get the “We’re in the neighborhood" text, I’m ready.

3. Serve Cookies—So Many Cookies

My family keeps all our Christmas cookies in tins by type. Take a few from each tin, arrange them on a fancy silver tray, and suddenly, you’re the low-effort host with the most.

4. Make a Cuppa

Coffee and cookies—who wouldn’t feel welcome with that combo? Keep your brew warm while you all laze in the living room and exchange holiday stories.

5. Or, Something Stronger

These cute mini canned cocktails are the just-right size for an afternoon sip (the Old Fashioned is my fave), and you don’t have to mix, muddle, or shake anything. Just pour over ice, add a cherry or orange peel, and serve.

6. Play a Game

You might be tired of yapping from earlier in the week, or maybe your friends brought their kids. That’s where a board game comes in. These ones tuck neatly on a shelf when it’s time to say goodbye.
