I'm feeling like there are others out there, besides me, who actually read, really read, cookbooks. I even read the acknowledgements, and the preface, and in the way back where it says what font was used..whu-oh, maybe that's a little too weird. :)
I've wanted to start a cookbook club for many years. Right now my book club brings food potluck-style, but I would love to read cookbooks and then pick courses to make and talk about them! A goal for the future, for sure!
WAAAHHHHH!!!!! Why don't I live near any food52-ers! What, exactly, do all you Texas, NYC, California people have against Colorado? It's nice here. Stunning mountain views, delicious buffalo, great hunting/fishing. Have I mentioned Stranahan's Whiskey? :) Sorry, I'll get over my fit of pique in a bit, but right now I'm going to wallow in my melencoly!
We could "cook up" a virtual CB club. Once a month a book, a recipe or 2 from the book, and email how it went, etc. Maybe not -- doesn't sound like as much fun. After all, we have FOOD52!
I'm thinking about a book group that would combine a love of books in general with a love of cookbooks. I was inspired by the book The Cookbook Collector, by Allegra Goodman. The group could gather to discuss the book and bring books/recipes/dishes inspired by the book. This book is a goldmine for thinking about food, although the author is more of an eater than a cook. She obviously loves food and books ... and I luv her writing ...
Also -- wanted to let you know that we're working on a new system of potluck parties. They'll have more structure and regularity so that people all over can get together around a collective theme, and then share their experiences on FOOD52. Should have more details on this in the coming weeks.
So let's invent one: A group of people (limited to a hospitable number) meets once a month. They select a cookbook, each picks a recipe or 2 to prepare, then bring it to a member's house for a potluck. They have a little organized discussion, maybe a report about the author or the cultural context, then they eat and have more discussion about what they are eating... Repeat next month, different house.
mrslarkin: a friend and I were doing something like that on twitter but it has fallen by the wayside (busy lives, etc). I would DEFINITELY be up for something like that!
cookbookcollector, food52ers host get togethers now and then for a potluck party. Check out some of these articles for more info: http://www.food52.com/blog/search?query=potluck
Amanda, remember last year when we did the Sunday Suppers cook along thing? First we did the Shrimp Biryani and then we did the Risotto finalists? That was so much fun. Any chance we could revive that event? It would be fun for those who aren't able to attend potlucks.
Those Sunday Suppers *were* fun! Unfortunately, the service we used for it was sold to Facebook. Wah! We've been keeping an eye out for another way to do the live IM/photo thing. Will let you know if we come up with something.
hmmm....you know, Hot Potato reminded me of how Facebook works, with real-time conversations and photos. How about we just create an event on Facebook for a Sunday Supper?
